Water Filtration Project

A-low-cost-water-purification-filter.png

Many people do not have access to clean drinking water and though dirty, what it takes to get it will leave you thankful.

Worldwide, 780 million people do not have access to an improved water source. Furthermore, an estimated 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation (more than 35% of the world's population).

Australia makes up 0.33% of the world’s population. That means that over 106 Australia’s go without access to clean water.

Your task this term is to create a filtration system to turn dirty water into clean.

The dirty water will be represented by a pot of ground coffee (1 level Tblsp per 1 cup of water).

To do this you will need to:

  • Google, YouTube, WikiHow, etc.: Explore different types of filtering.

  • Make a list of all the materials that water can pass through, a sponge for example.

  • Make a list of materials that could house your filter materials.

  • You cannot use any material that acts as a filter by design. eg: coffee filter.

Written component:

  • Explain how each element that you used contributes to filtering the dirty water.

  • Why did you use the particular materials you did? What advantages did they have?

  • Could your filter be adapted to help those in need of clean water? What could you do to make this happen?

Lastly, film and upload to Microsoft Teams your filter in action!
